Maya Ruins and Caves
Benque Viejo’s visitors can enjoy visiting ancient Maya Ruins such as the majestic Xunantunich Maya Ruin, which is nearby after crossing a hand-cranked ferry in neighboring San Jose, Succotz; and the Benque Viejo Mayan Site which is a few feet from residents’ homes.
Xunantunich (Maiden of the Rock)
Xunantunich (pronounced Shu-Nan-Tu-Nich), means Maiden of the Rock (Stone Woman). El Castillo, standing at 114 feet high, is one of the tallest Mayan buildings in Belize. Climbing “El Castillo” is a rewarding experience that offers visitors the enjoyment of with spectacular views of the hills and valleys surrounding Benque Viejo.
Benque Viejo Mayan Site
The Benque Viejo Mayan Site is located within the town and adjacent to some residents’ homes. It is said that this site was part of a larger suburb belonging to Xunantunich. Having a direct line-of-sight with Xunantunich, it is believed that it was the household of some elite families of the Xunantunich area.
Chechem Ha Caves
Located five miles from Benque Viejo, on the Hydro Road you can visit the caves at Chechem Ha.
